The Benefits of SEO for Images

If you're trying to ensure that your website is at the top of search results, you probably use a variety of search engine optimization tricks. Many websites, however, do not optimize their images for search engines. Since web crawlers do not see images, people often assume that all of their optimization needs to be focused on text. There are ways that you can tell Google's indexing system what an image is depicting.

If you use SEO for images, you will be able to both improve your ranking in standard text searches as well as having your photos show up in image searches. Having your photos displayed in image search results can be especially helpful if you are an online retailer. Right now, not many retailers are focused on ranking in image searches, so yours may be the only results a potential customer sees.

Two common methods of image optimization are to use HTML image tags and alt tags. Both of these tags tell a search engine what is shown in an image. When you are optimizing your website for search engines, it is important that you do not use a keyword or phrase too many times or the search engine may see it as spamming the keyword. Image tags and alt tags allow you to use keywords you are trying to improve your rank in more frequently and in a way that will not count against you.
